After some further reflection, we realize that your example with ArgoUML. (http://d.pr/i/m1cB) is not legal in UML 2.5. (It was legal in previous UML 1.x) However, it does look like Astah could support some changes to make it more naturally meet the need to have more than one reply for a message. For now, we can recommend the following, which is legal in Astah and in UML 2.5 https://www.dropbox.com/s/6s8q4ln6yxq0rfv/CondSeqDiag.jpg Hope this will help you until we determine additional changes that might make it easier for your purposes.
