I am new around here so I apologize in advance if I posted in the wrong section. I also tried searching for an answer, but could not find one.
I am also new to UML so this might be a stupid question.

Anyway, in a sequence diagram I am trying to create a branched reply message, but Astah does not allow it.
If I try to create a branch from reply it says:
"A Reply Message cannot have a Branch Message."
If I try to insert more that one reply message it says:
"Only one ReplyMessage is allowed on an ExecutionSpecification."

(This example is taken from my college textbook and roughly translated to English)
The difference is, in the textbook they made the diagram with ArgoUML which allowed them to have multiple reply messages, like so:

report error message that I tried to show in Astah here is actually a line with an arrow and with its type changed.

Now, I am wondering whether having multiple (or branched) reply messages is not allowed by UML specification, or Astah just does not allow it for some reason.

In our understanding, it is not clearly defined if the creation of multiple reply messages is allowed or not. However we feel that there are cases that we want more than one reply message like the example. So this is on our list to consider implementing in the future.

After some further reflection, we realize that your example with ArgoUML. (http://d.pr/i/m1cB) is not legal in UML 2.5.

(It was legal in previous UML 1.x)

However, it does look like Astah could support some changes to make it more naturally meet the need to have more than one reply for a message.

For now, we can recommend the following, which is legal in Astah and in UML 2.5
